What Is Costochondritis?
Costochondritis is inflammation of the cartilage that connects the ribs to the breastbone (sternum). It commonly causes localized chest pain and tenderness that may worsen with movement, deep breathing, coughing, or pressure over the affected area. Although the pain can feel alarming, costochondritis is usually related to the musculoskeletal structures of the chest wall.
Common Causes and Risk Factors
Possible Causes
- Repetitive upper-body movements
- Heavy lifting or physical strain
- Chest injury or trauma
- Persistent coughing or sneezing
- Muscle and chest wall strain
- Inflammation around the rib joints
- Sometimes, no clear cause is identified
Common Risk Factors
- Frequent physical activity
- Repetitive arm movements
- Recent respiratory infection
- Prolonged coughing
- Heavy exercise or lifting
- Previous chest wall injury
- Inflammatory conditions
Symptoms of Costochondritis
Costochondritis mainly causes pain and tenderness around the front of the chest, particularly where the ribs meet the breastbone. Symptoms can vary from mild discomfort to sharp or aching pain.
- Chest pain or aching
- Tenderness near the breastbone
- Pain that worsens with deep breathing
- Discomfort during coughing or sneezing
- Pain with certain upper-body movements
- Tenderness when pressure is applied to the affected area
Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis is usually based on your symptoms, medical history, and physical examination. Because chest pain can have several causes, a doctor may recommend appropriate tests when needed to rule out heart, lung, or other serious conditions. Treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation and addressing factors that may be contributing to the condition.
- Activity modification and adequate rest
- Medicines for pain and inflammation when appropriate
- Physical therapy and gentle stretching
- Targeted pain management for persistent symptoms
- Image-guided injections in selected cases
- Management of underlying musculoskeletal problems
